Pues eso mismo me pasó con la película Pesadilla Diabólica. Cuando la visioné hace años terminé, eso sí, de manera morbosa, encantado con el miedo que me transmitió. Y años después me viene a la cabeza una escena de un coche fúnebre que no me dejó dormir durante de manera relajada durante un tiempo.

Pesadilla Diabólica es una película injustamente olvidada que mereció más repercusión, no solo por el reparto, Oliver Reed y Bette Davis,  si no por el director Dan Curtis, curtido en el mundo de la televisión por su gran éxito a finales de los setenta con la serie vampírica  “Sombras en la oscuridad “ (1966-1971) creada por él y de la que se realizaron dos adaptaciones cinematográficas, siendo la más conocida la descafeinada versión de Tim Burton “Sombras tenebrosas”.

Para Pesadilla Diabólica el director aprovechó sabiamente sus pocos medios para conseguir un máximo de resultados. Y vaya si lo consiguió. Es una película que perfectamente se podría poner a la altura de “Al final de la escalera”, terror clásico donde lo más importante de todo, y yo diría que su secreto para ser un buen film de terror, está en sugerir, que como ya sabemos siempre es mejor que mostrar.

La cinta narra las vacaciones  de verano que un matrimonio (Oliver Reed y Karen Black) con su hijo y la tía del marido (estelar presencia de Bette Davis) deciden pasar en una espectacular casa que han logrado alquilar por un precio bastante menor de lo razonable.

Pronto empezarán a pasar cosas de lo más extrañas, revelándose poco a poco que la casa en cuestión se alimenta de la energía vital de sus moradores. La premisa viene en parte de la novela homónima en la que se inspira, escrita por Robert Morasco.

El director consigue a la perfección una atmósfera que va apoderándose de la historia, mínima y escueta, pero contundente y efectiva. Una atmósfera donde todo se sugiere realmente, donde el efecto en el espectador es mucho más devastador.

Cuenta con unas escenas inolvidables. El personaje de Burgues Meredith con apenas diez minutos en pantalla y pocas líneas de diálogo deja impregnada la película de cierta inquietud, sus frases, sin decirlo claramente, dicen lo que realmente ocurre en la casa.

Esa magia cinematográfica me caló  al verla siendo muy joven, me hipnotizó sin haber visto nada y, por supuesto, me aterró. Sobre todo las escalofriantes apariciones de un chófer de coche fúnebre. Una de las escenas  más inquietantes es la filmada en la piscina entre padre e hijo en la que se ve el cambiante rostro del actor (Oliver Reed) convirtiéndolo en una amenaza latente.

Las numerosas visitas de la mujer a la habitación de la que nunca sale la anciana, dueña de la casa, o las numerosas fotografías encima del mueble, son muestras de lo que el espectador sospecha, convirtiendo así, la película en una gran obra dentro del género. La gran Bette Davis muestra su espectacular talento con un personaje que empobrece a todos.

Un film más que recomendable que merece ser recordado y sacado de ese baúl donde lleva años guardado. Lo lamentable es que a gran parte del público actual no le serviría como película de terror, acostumbrados como están a que les cuenten todo con pelos y señales, la sutileza, quizá no sería bien recibida.

Si eres amante de este género, adelante, no te arrepentirás si la ves o si la vuelves a ver..
